BRADFORD’S wholesale market has been named the best in the country in a national awards ceremony.

St James’s Market, which lies on a six-acre site in Essex Street, was named best wholesale market at the Great British Market Awards in Birmingham yesterday.

It supplies fresh fruit and vegetables, exotic produce, flowers and pre-packed supplies for businesses such as restaurants.

Presenting the awards was former Corrie Street star Sean Wilson, who played Martin Platt and has become a chef since leaving the famous cobbles of Weatherfield.

Bradford Council markets manager Colin Wolstenholme also gave a presentation at the event, which was organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities.

The Bradford market also won the award in 2011 when the judges were particularly impressed by the market as it had started recycling 80 per cent of all its waste.

Last year the wholesale market category was won by New Covent Garden Market.
