ABOUT 80 people gathered yesterday at a memorial in Oakworth to commemorate six Royal Canadian Air Force crewmen who died at the site 70 years ago.

The men were killed when their Wellington Bomber BK387 crashed in fog at the spot in Tewitt Lane, on January 2, 1944, during a training flight.

Among those at the service were Lieutenant Colonel Tressa Home, of the Royal Canadian Air Force, who laid a wreath, and her sister Brigadier General Allen Home.

Janet Armstrong, who organised the service, said: “It was very good and there were about 80 people there.”

Mrs Armstrong said a relative of one of the airmen had been in touch about the event from Essex, but she was unsure if the person attended yesterday. The village society organises a service on the first Sunday in January.
