THERE could be few people more apt to commemorate the centenary of the World War One Christmas truce – which saw soldiers playing football in no-man’s land – than today’s Bradford City stars.
They turned out for the club’s annual carol service last night at St Michael and All Angels Church, Carr House Road, Shelf.
It was part of a nationwide initiative for football clubs to mark the anniversary of one of the most poignant moments of the conflict, which preceded the unimaginable horrors of the western front.
The local event was organised by club Chaplain, the Rev Andy Greiff, who said the service involved readings from Bradford City players and a soloist who sang Silent Night in German, with the congregation joining in later with the English version.
The event nationally is raising money for the Tear Fund which works with children in war zones around the globe.
Meanwhile, other carol services were taking place in the district with Deputy Lord Mayor Roger L’Amie attending the Bradford Council music and arts service Christmas Festival at Bradford Cathedral and Lord Mayor Mike Gibbons at the Ilkley Choral Society carol concert, with Ben Rhydding Primary School, at St John’s Church in Ben Rhydding.
