BRADFORD City of Film's latest Filmmaker of the Month hails from Milwaukee in the US.

Gregory Bishop won the title for the August competition with a film called Cigar Box Guitars, documenting the work of Johnny Washday, an artist who fuses his love of music and heritage to create sublime guitars from antique cigar boxes.

“A close colleague who knew Johnny told me about his upcoming gallery," said Gregory. "When I met Johnny I was drawn to his storyteller presence. I spent the day talking with him about his practice, method and message surrounding his handmade, cigar box guitars. I found out later that the short film brought him so much attention that he extended his gallery show to another weekend.”

He added: “I'm thrilled and greatly appreciative of this honour from Big Screen Bradford. I've already watched a bit of this year's monthly selection and I'm honoured to be among such talented filmmakers.”

City of Film director David Wilson said: “It's fantastic to be receiving entries for this competition from all over the world. We’ve had a record number of entries this month. Every element of Gregory's piece was fascinating, from the breadth of his interview with Mr. Washday, to his delicate, contemplative sense of style and tone."
