A Bradford library was chosen as one of 200 libraries across the country to host a big book giveaway as part of Save the Children's national literacy campaign.

The event, held on Saturday at Holme Wood library, was part of a scheme to encourage parents to read with their children and develop a love of books from an early age.

Penguin Random House, The Reading Agency and Good Morning Britain were behind the five-day literacy campaign, which culminated in the high-profile book giveaway this weekend.

Penguin Random House had identified that Diary of a Wimpy Kid, by Jeff Kinney, was a book that had encouraged a whole generation of readers, so decided to have a large-scale national giveaway of 10,000 copies of the first book in the series to get even more children reading.

Holme Wood Library, on Broadstone Way, had 50 copies of the book to give away to the local community, while children who attended on Saturday also enjoyed craft and colouring activities through the day.

Children were also told about the benefits of becoming a member of Bradford Libraries and the BookStart Bear Club.
