TWO "unsung heroes" who go the extra mile to support voluntary groups are the latest nominees in this year's Telegraph & Argus Community Stars Awards.

Dianne French has been involved with what is now the Roleystone horse sanctuary in Wrose since 1972, and Roger Hyde has been an integral part of the 18th Bradford South Queensbury Scout Group since he first joined as a cub back in 1950.

Both have been put forward for their "unwavering" contributions to their local communities.

Chelsea Hudson and Lynn Hopwood, who nominated Miss French, 59, in the volunteer category of the awards, said she worked tirelessly to support the sanctuary, which also caters for goats, dogs, sheep and pigs.

"Dianne does not miss a day caring for these unfortunate animals," they said. "She is there from 6.30am every day and does not finish until 10.30pm.

"She does have other volunteers for help, but she is there all the time and never wavers in her work for them."

Upon hearing of her nomination, Miss French, who volunteers seven days a week at the sanctuary, said: "It has come as a surprise, but its always nice when people recognise the work that you do."

Former scout Tommy Carroll nominated Mr Hyde in the Community Champion category of the awards, describing him as the "driving force" behind the Queensbury group for more than 50 years.

"His determination and dedication to this cause is remarkable," he said. "Hundreds, if not thousands, of boys in Queensbury and the surrounding areas have grown under his guidance.

"He is without doubt an unsung hero, and I can think of no-one more deserving of a Community Star award."

Mr Hyde, who remains Group Scout Leader at the age of 71, also promotes the Donkey Derby in Foxhill Park, Queensbury, every year and his fundraising efforts have helped to give the group some much-needed financial stability.

"I'm very proud to be nominated, but the success of the group is a real team effort," he said.

The Community Stars Awards are being organised by the T&A and Bradford Council to ensure unsung groups and individuals are rewarded for efforts in their neighbourhoods.

Nominations, which must be received by Tuesday, September 30, will be whittled down by a panel of judges before a shortlist goes to public vote.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony at City Hall on December 8, where they will each be presented with the prestigious Bradford Medal.
