AN ANGRY bridegroom pushed a hotel security guard through a glass door after trouble flared at his wedding reception over plans to close the bar, a court heard.

Company director Richard Airey intervened when one of his guests got into a row with James Heseltine at the Mercure Hotel in Bradford Road, Bingley, in the early hours of August 9.

Airey, 36, of Dryden Street, Bingley, pushed Mr Heseltine into a glass door that smashed, cutting his back.

Prosecutor Suzanne Paige told Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court today that Mr Heseltine was working as a night porter/security guard at the hotel.

There was trouble between the two men over plans to shut the bar at 1am.

Mr Heseltine suffered two small cuts on his back when he was pushed into the door.

Miss Paige said he did not need hospital treatment for his injuries.

Airey, who runs his own textiles business, pleaded guilty to common assault on Mr Heseltine.

His solicitor advocate, Laiquat Din, said Airey became involved when Mr Heseltine challenged another guest at the wedding party over the bar closure.

"It was his wedding day and not a very nice way to end his wedding night," Mr Din told the court.

Airey had written to the hotel to apologise and he had offered to pay for the damage to the door.

He told the police he was sorry and admitted the offence at the first opportunity.

The court heard Airey realised his behaviour was unacceptable and wanted to give up drinking alcohol.

District Judge Susan Bouch sentenced him to a 12 month community order, with supervision and a six month alcohol treatment requirement.

He was fined £50 and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and £200 compensation to Mr Heseltine.

The judge said the offence was aggravated by the fact that Mr Heseltine was working at the hotel as a security guard.

Airey pushed him through a glass door and although his injuries were not serious, he was put at significant risk.
