A MUCH-LOVED children's disco which has entertained families for decades now has a secure future thanks to the efforts of one young fan.

Ten-year-old Cassidy Rozee and her friends were regulars at the junior discos for seven to 12-year-olds held monthly at the Ian Clough Hall, Baildon.

Historically the event was run by local Girl Guide groups, but the pressure of finding volunteers and meeting current safety and security rules meant that the future of the Cloughy Disco was in doubt.

And that was when Sandal Primary school pupil Cassidy suggested to her dad, Andy, that they should try to protect the popular Friday evening attraction.

"Cassidy really loved the disco and so we came up with the idea of a petition.

"I drew it up on the computer and she took it round to her school, where she got 40 signatures and then around and about Baildon where she got 40 more," said Mr Rozee, a probation officer.

"Cassidy's really involved in the community, goes to Brownies and plays football at school and we think the disco was a really good, constructive thing."

Mr Rozee contacted Baildon councillor and Conservative Children's Services spokesman Debbie Davies and showed her the petition.

She then suggested to Bradford Council play officers that they take over management, which has now been agreed.

"The council are going to introduce some new things like healthy eating snacks and exercise classes and other activities so it widens the appeal," said Mr Rozee, 44.

"I'm so glad it won't stop - lots and lots of children at my school and around Baildon all love it so much," Cassidy added.

Cllr Davies explained how she had brokered a secure future for the Cloughy Disco:

"It's so popular with at least 70 kids going every month and it's a lovely safe way for them to socialise independently and safely.

"Play officers at Shipley have now agreed to take it over from the Girl Guides and all staff and volunteers will be fully CRB checked and all things like that.

"We still need more volunteers and anyone interested should contact Bradford Council's Shipley Area office," Cllr Davies said.

Councillor Ralph Berry, the Council's Executive Member for Children's Services, added: "It is great that we are able to support what is a well-loved disco."
