DOZENS of women across Bradford's communities joined together for a protest aimed at drawing attention to the suffering in Gaza.

Bradford Women For Peace, which includes members from many diverse organisations, organised the event at the bottom of Sunbridge Road yesterday as an opportunity for women to attend and leave their own messages of support, with a period of silence held at the end of the session rather than speeches.

Messages were written on to pieces of ribbon and woven between strings on a wooden frame, which is being preserved to be displayed in future.

Organiser Liz Firth said: "We are a collection of different women's organisations and we wanted to create a space for women to have a voice about peace in Gaza.

"The idea was that people could come and leave messages, woven into the frames, with a minute's silence at the end, but no speeches.

"This is women doing what women do best, working together," she said.

Some of those attending turned up with billboards and the event also attracted a smattering of support from passing men.

The written messages will now be held by the Touchstones inter-faith project with the expectation they will be displayed again in future.
