Tour de France Hollywood-style sign has poignant new role

A TOUR de France-inspired Hollywood-style sign in Oxenhope is being deployed again, this time to mark 100 years since Britain's entry into the First World War.

The project, which originally set up the huge, unmissable sign in an Oxenhope field, has teamed up with Worth Valley Publishing and the Men of Worth military history group to create a poignant visual reminder of the trauma of 1914 to 1918.

The latest venture has been dubbed the Centenary Project.

Russell Brown, the man behind the creation of the giant sign, was approached by Andy Wade from Men of Worth, who suggested that a sign could be erected to commemorate the Great War.

He said: "It seemed a fitting way to create a legacy project that continued our educational aims.

"We will continue to work collaboratively and engage local people. Oldfield Primary School is the first school to participate in this project. Prior to breaking up for summer holiday a number of pupils from the school helped to paint a giant poppy that we've now revealed as part of the sign to commemorate the First World War."

A gathering next to the sign was staged on centenary day on Monday, which was attended by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Mike Gibbons.
