STREET wardens in the district are using smart phones for a range of tasks.

The hi-tech gadgetry is allowing the Bradford Council-funded wardens to spend more of their time on patrol.

The wardens can access messages while on the move, find their way around with Google maps, and take photographs of problem areas.

There are able to log complaints on electronic forms and schedule revisits, avoiding duplication with other wardens and ensuring tasks are carried out.

The wardens can also use Google Translate to improve communication with members of the public who cannot speak English.

A report presented to Keighley Area Committee revealed that the smart phones were improving staff performance, reducing errors, and helping managers identify important issues that were affecting local people.

Wardens will soon be able to report issues directly to the relevant council departments, so they can be tackled sooner.
