FOOTBALL fans are being urged to be extra careful in the kitchen during the World Cup.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service wants people to think of safety first, especially if they're enjoying a drink during games.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dave Walton said: “Many fans may be indulging in more alcohol that usual as celebrations get under way. This can make people less alert and, as a consequence, the risk of fire in the home increases.
“Cooking and alcohol do not mix and we know that over half of fires in the home start in the kitchen.
“Likewise, if you are planning a barbecue, remember to only use approved fire lighters, not flammable fuels - otherwise you could get shown more than just a red card."
Safety tips include never cooking while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, never leaving cooking unattended and emptying barbecue ashes onto bare garden soil, not into a dustbin.
