A Bradford church will open its doors to show off 200 years of history at an exhibition.

Cornerstone Methodist Church in Great Horton Road will display a variety of more than 200 photographs and other pieces of memorabilia from its past on Saturday.

The exhibition, held between 9.30am and 4pm, will be opened up by the new Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Mike Gibbons, and the Lady Mayoress Elizabeth Shaw.

Artefacts also on display will include documents, items depicting and illustrating the history and life of all of the churches who united to eventually become Cornerstone Church.

The event also features live music and refreshments.

It is one of a series of events the church is holding to mark the milestone.

On Sunday, the Reverend Michael Faulkner, who attended Great Horton Methodist Sunday School, will lead a service from 10.30am.

A coffee morning, with the exhibition still available to view, will take place on Saturday, June 21, between 10am and noon.

Brian Crossland, 86, property secretary at Cornerstone Church, said: “This exhibition is part of the history of the building.

“It’s a real snapshot. In 1975, we discovered a time capsule featuring a newspaper from 1856. We also have old documents that date back to the 1860s.

“Please come along and have a look at what is local history in Great Horton.

“It’s a real family church. My father Herman was the church’s choirmaster in the early 1940s, so my family is steeped in the church.

“I got my first prize from Sunday School when I was three.

“The church is right in the centre of the old Great Horton village. We are still here. We have got very faithful members.”

In 1814, the first Wesleyan School at an area known as Old Todley, which was built in 1766, was becoming too small and what was known as the Hunt Yard Chapel was built on the church’s present site. In 1862, the church was extended to accommodate more than 1,000 seats.

In 1974, the building was refurbished to how it still looks today.

Cornerstone Church now includes a host of Methodist societies including Great Horton Wesleyan, Bethel, Dirkhill and Eastbrook Hall.

In July 2011, the name of the church was changed to Cornerstone Church/URC Great Horton.
