Football fans are bringing a taste of the World Cup to Bradford with a tournament to raise awareness and money for youth charities.

Inspiring Others, an organisation set up by four Bradford youngsters, is hosting five-a-side World Cup football at Goals Bradford.

The group has asked businesses to provide a team for each of the 32 nations taking part in Brazil. They will play at the Kings Road venue on June 21.

Aisha Saddique, Jordan Hibbert and Eugene Amponsah, all 17, and Rahib Shabir, 21, applied for £2,000 from social housing provider InCommunities to stage the tournament, which is also supported by Bradford Youth Development Partnership. All money raised at the competition will be pumped back into BYDP, who work with people aged eight to 30.

Miss Saddique said: “We want to show youth work and sport in a positive light. With the World Cup round the corner, it seemed a good way to get everyone active.

“It will show how BYDP helped change our lives and give something back too.

“The event is about raising awareness and any money we raise will be given out to charities in Bradford, like BYDP.

“Sport and youth work reduces crime and anti-social behaviour. It builds young people’s confidence and self-esteem.

“After receiving education, support and guidance from BYDP, we decided to form Inspiring Others. We’re hoping to raise at least £2,000.”

Sports development officer at BYDP Saima Hussain said the tournament had been turned around in less than a month.

“We want businesses to invest in the voluntary sector. We want them to take part for short or long-term charity status,” she said. The tournament will run from 11.30am to 4pm.
