A trader and his firm have been ordered to pay more than £5,000 for food and drink offences – including food being a total of 800 days out of date.

Esmaeil Rajabie, who runs Shirazi Cash & Carry in Whetley Lane, Bradford, must pay £2,638 – and his company must pay the same. The 34-year-old, of Springs Meadow, Bradford, appeared before Bradford and Keighley magistrates yesterday At a hearing last month, Rajabie admitted supplying vodka below minimum strength and containing ingredients that meant it could not be organic, as described on the label; vodka lot-marking failures; displaying cottage cheese beyond its use-by date; selling food not labelled in English; and not displaying a warning about additives on some Turkish Delight.

The comnpany was charged with the same offences.

Harjit Ryatt, prosecuting, said Trading Standards officers went to the store twice in April and August last year. Some 146 products were found to be past their use-by date – totalling more than 800 days.

Fazal Karim, mitigating, said manufacturers should be held more responsible for labelling.

Rajabie was fined £1,100, and ordered to pay costs of £1,428 and a surcharge of £110. His firm was ordered to pay the same amounts. Rajabie and Shirazi Cash & Carry Ltd must pay £5,276.

The shop’s manager, 33-year-old Ahmandreza Zaraie, also faces three charges relating to the vodka. His case was adjourned until June 17 because he is in Iran.
