Young people in Silsden, Steeton and Eastburn are being invited to get crafty about the Tour de France.

They can decorate wooden bike shapes in the run-up to the cycle race’s passage along the Aire Valley in July.

Arts sessions will be led by youth workers during their regular outreach events across Bradford Council’s Craven ward.

The £1,000 project is being funded in memory of ward councillor Michael Kelly (inset), who died in February at 70.

Each councillor is given an annual budget to spend on community projects in their ward.

Fellow Craven ward Councillor Andrew Mallinson decided the project would be a worthy beneficiary of some of Coun Kelly’s share.

Coun Mallinson said: “The idea is these children will have a finished product. They can take it home, and there’s a wider awareness of the Tour de France among their families.

“People could also do a litter pick in the local area and use what they find to make a recycled bike.”
