A SCHOOL plagued by parking problems has urged parents to take more care when dropping off and picking up their children over fears someone could be hurt.

Farfield Primary School, Reevy Crescent, Buttershaw, says it is doing as much as possible to tackle the issues, which include parking on zig zags, yellow lines, pavements and across residents’ driveways.

A week of action was recently held in partnership with the police and Council wardens, but there are fears the long-running problems will continue when visible enforcement action isn’t there.

Ewan Clark, business manager at the school, said: “When the wardens and PCSOs were here for a week of action, it looked really clear outside school.

“There was a great line of sight and no issues with children not being seen.”

But as a result of inconsiderate parking he said it “wasn’t difficult to imagine something horrible happening”. Mr Clark added officers will speak to drivers and hand out tickets for bad parking, but when they are not there, the problems persist.

“There’s the real fear that somebody is going to be injured, or worse, through people being inconsiderate. I have been here for just under three years and it has been a constant issue that we have been trying to address.”

When the Telegraph & Argus visited the school at peak pick-up time, a number of cars, including taxis, were brazenly flouting rules of the road. At one point, a horse was also ridden down the centre of the road.

Parent Carolina Walker, 38, said: “Stay clear of of yellow lines and zig zags - it’s common sense. It gets extremely busy if you’ve got cars on both sides.”

While Nicole Kipka, 37, added: “We’ve got prams and sometimes you can’t get them past. You worry about the safety of children. It’s just chaos.”

Resident Elaine Cooper, 57, described the situation as “ridiculous”.

“You can’t walk down the side because of the cars,” she said. “Someone is going to end up getting knocked down.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Road safety measures such as zig-zags are there to keep school users safe. Motorists who park on them are not only causing an obstruction but are also putting children’s lives at risk.

“We will continue operations with partner agencies at schools across the Bradford South area to tackle parking problems and will take action against those who park illegally or cause an obstruction with their vehicle.”
