AN EAGLE-eyed neighbour tackled a fire after alerting a family to a blaze in their kitchen.

The man spotted smoke in a terraced house on St Chad's Road, Girlington, at about 4pm today.

He alerted a mum and two children who were inside the property before throwing water on the fire to stop it spreading.

Fire crews from Fairweather Green and Bradford stations were called to the incident.

A spokesman for Fairweather Green station said the fire would have spread "rapidly" if not for the intervention of the neighbour. He added that the property had no working smoke alarms.

The fire started because some kitchen roll had been left too close to the hob while the woman was cooking. All three family members were in another room when the fire started.

The fire service spokesman said no-one was injured and the kitchen was badly-damaged.

Fire crews will be out in the area next week giving out free smoke alarms and fire safety advice.
