STUDENTS and staff at the University of Bradford were given an insight into life in a wheelchair with a ride through the city.

The wheelchair push saw a group of 14 able-bodied students and staff go from the university's Faculty of Management and Law campus on Emm Lane in Heaton to its city centre campus.

The route, which took three hours to complete, also took the group through Lister Park, Bradford city centre via City Park, along Thornton Road and up to the university via Longside Lane.

The event, which also saw the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Joanne Dodds, take part, was run to raise awareness of accessibility on campus.

It will also give a chance to showcase the new fleet of wheelchairs bought by the university's Student Union for use by Bradford students and staff.

Mark Garratt, the university's director of external affairs, said: "It was a really good experience and an eye opener.

"It was a challenge but it makes you realise what wheelchair users have to go through."

The event was held as part of the University of Bradford's first Diversity Festival which ends today.

The festival celebrates differences, with events highlighting the different ethnic backgrounds of the university's students as well as events looking at disability, gender and sexuality and religion.
