Alan Davie, whose artistic talents have enabled him to make his mark

as a painter, poet, musician, silversmith, and jeweller, was given an

honorary degree of Doctor of Letters at a graduation held by Heriot-Watt

University in Edinburgh yesterday. In 1940, Davie received a Diploma in

Art from Edinburgh College of Art, which has been associated with

Heriot-Watt for 25 years. A spokeswoman for the two institutions said

yesterday Davie's honour was in recognition of ''the huge range and

distinction of his artistic achievement''.
