BRITAIN will tomorrow announce it is to recognise Macedonia. The Greek

Government has been informed in advance, and the move comes just prior

to Greece taking on the presidency of the European Union next month.

Britain has had a representative in Skopje, Mr Ian Whitehead, since the

summer. He will now become the charge d'affairs, but the intention is to

appoint an ambassador in due course. Germany is also expected to

recognise the new state at the same time.
