THOUSANDS of people took advantage of the first Brighouse Canal, Beer and Music Festival at the weekend - the latest event to put the town on the map.

Steven Lord, of Brighouse Business Initiative, which organised the event, said the occasion had something for everybody.

The town centre became a traffic-free zone as an estimated 20,000 people came to sample the attractions.

They ranged from classic cars, steam engines and canal narrow boat trips to animal displays and an exhibition of rope making and canal crafts.

There were three outdoor music stages for 30 live acts, catering for all tastes with rock and pop, folk and brass bands, and a street market with 90 stalls and real ale bars.

The Business Initiative worked with the Canal and River Trust and the Calder Navigation Society to put on the event.

Mr Lord said: "It has taken months and months to organise. It is hard work but it is worth it.

"It's fantastic day out for all the family and there really is something for everybody. The town is loving it, it is a triumph."

He said the event followed a 1940s themed day in the summer. "These events keep the town thriving and they seem to be working because 96 per cent of the retail space in the town centre is occupied. People see our independent shops and then come again the following week to do their shopping. It's definitely working."
