Former Bradford City striker Bobby Campbell and his wife Paula have denied fraud charges relating to when they were stewards at a working man’s club in Huddersfield.

Campbell, 57, who is the Bantams' all-time leading goal scorer, retired from football in 1988.

Appearing with his wife at Leeds Crown Court today both denied three charges of fraud.

They are alleged in the first charge between December 15, 2011 and January 15, last year to have committed fraud by abusing their position as stewards of Lindley WMC by claiming an excessive amount of ullage/wastage.

In the second charge between the same dates they are alleged to have committed fraud by claiming an excessive amount of happy hour allowance.

The third charge alleges between May 23, 2012 and June 25, 2012 they under recorded takings by £1,000.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier QC told Campbell and his 56-year-old wife, of Brian Street, Huddersfield, their unconditional bail would continue until their trial which is fixed for December 1.

Campbell, who was born in Belfast started his career with Aston Villa before being sold to Huddersfield Town in 1975 where he made 31 appearances and scored nine goals.

He had one season with Sheffield United before returning for seven games to Huddersfield before signing for Halifax Town.

In December 1979 he joined Bradford City and went on to make more than 300 appearances for the club becoming the leading goalscorer with 143 goals.

During two spells over seven years at Valley Parade, Campbell was the leading scorer in every season he played for City and helped the club to two promotions, in 1982 and 1985, playing alongside legends such as Stuart McCall and John Hendrie.

Last year, more than 300 fans flocked to Valley Parade to pay tribute to him as he unveiled a book about his career, 'They Don't Make Them Like Him Any More, ' written by long-time City supporter Paul Firth.

Campbell also played twice for Northern Ireland, in the 1982 Home Internationals, and was selected for the international squad for that year's World Cup in Spain, but did not make an appearance.
