FULNECK pupils are celebrating their success after clinching a national award.

Year 5 and 6 scholars at Fulneck in Pudsey were among junior school pupils from around the country who participated in a competition to design a solution to help combat plastic waste and littering.

Their play, written by Zara Madden, Katie Proctor and Olivia Holroyd, was one of two Fulneck entries which were among the 20 projects shortlisted from 18,000 entries.

But the panel of judges on the Primary Earth Summit panel, including MPs, journalists and leading environmental industry professionals, selected the school's play as the winner of the Marine Environmental category.

The Primary Earth Summit competition aims to get children and young people thinking creatively about action-orientated solutions to environmental issues, and empowering them to play a direct and active role in shaping their own future.

In addition to winning the award, there is also the possibility that the young pupils’ play will be seen on a wider stage, as the top four solutions selected by the panel will have an opportunity to receive sponsor support to increase knowledge and awareness of plastic waste and reducing marine litter.

Fulneck School teacher Gemma Zincke said: “This has been a fascinating project to be involved in - the children have really enjoyed taking part. They are overjoyed to have won their category and we are very proud of them too."
