A 26-YEAR-OLD MAN is behind bars awaiting a lengthy prison sentence for raping a 14-year-old schoolgirl at a party and sexually molesting her friend.

Daniel Schofield, of Lynfield Drive, Chellow Grange, Bradford, was remanded in custody after he was convicted by a jury on Tuesday of two counts of raping the teenager at a house in Keighley in September 2012.

He was also found guilty of attempted rape, sexual activity with a child, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, causing a child to engage in sexual activity, and having a bladed article.

He was cleared of three charges of raping another 14-year-old schoolgirl and two of sexual activity with a child.

Schofield pleaded guilty to three charges of sexual activity with a child before the start of his trial.

Yesterday afternoon, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC discharged the jury from giving a verdict on a final allegation of rape.

The panel was deadlocked after deliberating for more than 16 hours on its verdicts and said there was no possibility of reaching a decision of at least a 10 to 2 majority.

Prosecutor Philip Standfast said the Crown was not seeking a retrial on the charge.

Mr Standfast said he had taken instructions from a senior representative from the Crown Prosecution Service and it was not in the public interest.

The outstanding rape allegation was left to lie on the court file.

Judge Durham Hall adjourned sentence until August 6 so that a report can be prepared assessing the level of risk Schofield poses to the community.

He asked a specialist probation officer to address the "worrying concerns of Schofield's attitudes and weaknesses."

The judge urged Schofield not to try to minimise his crimes when interviewed by his probation officer in prison.

Mr Standfast produced a victim impact statement from one of the girls, to be read at the sentencing hearing, and a draft Sexual Offences Prevention Order to be drawn up at the hearing.

Schofield raped the girl after taking her and her two of her friends to a house party in Keighley.

He gave his victims vodka and lager and one smoked cannabis.

The girls got drunk and were escorted upstairs by Schofield into separate bedrooms.

Schofield admitted having sex with one of the underage girls, saying it was consensual.
