A KEIGHLEY historian's search for a First World War memorial has been immortalised on screen.

Filmmaker Oliver Chapman followed Ian Walkde's search for a plaque that originally belonged to Keighley Albion Cycling Club.

Mr Chapman has sent his video to the BBC in the hope that it will be shown as part of regional coverage of the Tour de France or the First World War centenary.

He said: “Touring For The Plaque is a five-minute version of a potentially longer documentary.”

Mr Walkden is a leading member of the Men of Worth Project, which records the lives and experiences of war veterans from the Keighley area.

Over the past few months he has led the Men of Worth’s search for the memorial, which was last in the 1970s at Keighley Albion’s clubhouse in Halifax Road.

The memorial honours members of the cycling club who lost their lives in the First World War.

Mr Walkden said that despite extensive research the whereabouts of the plaque not yet been uncovered.

He said: “We feel we have to rely on the fact that someone might have taken the memorial for safekeeping.

“I know some people who were in the club the time, but they don’t know what happened to the plaque. One lady seems to think a gentleman might have taken it when the club stopped.”

Mr Walkden said that in its later years the Albion Club become more of a social venue than a cycling club.

He added: “A man from London sent me a medal accredited to the Albion Cycling Club, which he bought at a flea market.”

Mr Walkden hopes that Mr Chapman’s film, if screened on regional television, will jog people’s memories about what happened to the plaque.

Mr Chapman said he had high hopes for the film, which so far only exists as a five-minute broadcast-quality version.

He said BBC Yorkshire currently had that version and he hoped it might appear as part of their Grand Depart or World War One coverage.

“I imagine I’ll hear back from them within the next few days," he added.

Mr Chapman works professionally as a corporate videographer, making films for private companies, but also creates his own documentaries, music videos and animated films.

He also co-runs Worth Valley Talent Productions which aims to provide support for film companies shooting in the Keighley area.
