Nurses to stage day of protest over pay rise snub

Nurses will take part in a day of action as part of a national pay row.

Members of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) from Yorkshire and Humber will take part in an event in June protesting against the government’s refusal to honour a recommended one per cent pay rise for all NHS staff.

The RCN Yorkshire and The Humber Day of Action will be held on Thursday, June 5 from 11am to 2pm at Leeds General Infirmary, Calverley Street, Leeds.

It is the first in a series of activities to show the government how angry NHS nursing staff feel about its decision, in March, not to award all NHS staff a one per cent cost of living rise in 2014/15, as recommended by the Independent Pay Review Body.

Roy Tomlinson, RCN Council member for Yorkshire and The Humber and chairman of the Regional Board, said: “Nurses and health care assistants are struggling to cope with mounting cost-of-living pressures on top of unprecedented demands at work.”

A Department of Health spokesman said: “NHS staff are our greatest asset. We cannot afford a pay rise on top of incremental pay increases of up to six per cent without risking frontline jobs and safe staffing levels.”
