VIDEO: Couple win planning battle to carry on gardening
6:00am Thursday 29th May 2014 in News
A couple have spoken of their “nightmare” battle with the Council over the future of their garden.
Amanda Wadiun and Paul Garnett bought land next to their home from the Council, on the condition they could only use it as a garden.
But after spending thousands on it, they were then threatened with enforcement action from a different Council department – planning enforcement – which said they could not use it as a garden.
The couple, of Wilson Road, Wyke, were visibly emotional after they won their battle at a planning panel meeting yesterday, when councillors officially granted permission.
Local councillor David Robinson (Ind, Wyke), who backed the couple at the meeting, afterwards said the situation had been “absolutely barmy”.
The couple, who have two young children, had rented the garden from the Council before buying it for £10,000 back in 2011.
Miss Wadiun, 26, said they used it to grow their own vegetables and keep chickens and geese.
She said: “It has been an absolute nightmare not knowing what was going to happen.”
