A former building society executive who was personal assistant to the man behind the creation of Bradford & Bingley in 1964, has died at the age of 91.

Ken Berry spent more than 40 years with the organisation, formed through a merger with the Bradford Second Equitable and led by the late Bob Gardner.

Mr Berry, who lived for many years in Grosvenor Road, Saltaire, began his career at the Bradford Second Equitable in 1939.

He served in the RAF in India and Singapore before returning as a mortgage manager, then became personal assistant to Bob Gardner and retiring in 1984.

Mr Berry played cricket for Wibsey Congs, table tennis and tennis and was a member of Shipley Golf Club.

Mr Berry is survived by his wife Freda, who he married in 1947 and they had two sons and a daughter. The couple moved to Southampton to be closer to their daughter and the funeral is at Wessex Vale Crematorium, Southampton, on Monday, June 2, at 1.45pm.
