A derelict corner of land could soon be turned into a community and education centre hosting classes for adults and children.

The building, proposed for the corner of Parkside Road and Birch Lane in West Bowling, would be open to anyone and for use by all ages. Despite there being a number of other community centres nearby, applicant Amir Raja says they do not offer facilities for everyone and hopes this centre will bring locals together.

As well as rooms for different groups to use, the centre would offer language classes, homework groups and library and IT facilities. Mr Raja said the centre would be a not- for-profit venture.

He said: “There is a current centre nearby, but that is only small and for children aged five to ten. Our aim with this centre is to make it for the whole community.

“The site at the moment is an old garage and an area where people just dump things. It doesn’t look nice. This will be for local people who are within walking distance. It will be for anyone in the community who wants to use it.” He purchased the site for £15,000 and estimates the centre will cost between £250,000 and £300,000 to build, with money coming from community fundraising.

So far the application has attracted dozens of responses, with some objecting over traffic issues but many supporting the plans.

Architect Rashid Moghul said although parking would be limited, the intention was for the centre to be used manly by people who live within walking distance.

He said: “The site has been a barren eyesore, especially for a site on a main road. We want to create something that would give some pride back to West Bowling. It will be a building for anyone and everyone. The idea is to get the whole community involved, especially the women. There will be classes to help people get some new skills that could improve their job prospects. There will also be classes to improve people’s health and fitness.”

He said if the application was granted work on the centre would likely start in 2015.

The centre would open from 7am to 10pm and Bradford Council will make a decision on the application in June.
