More than a third of drivers across the Bradford district are putting their lives at risk by not having regular eye tests, according to a new survey.

Results from the study, conducted by Sight Care, found that 36 per cent of drivers felt their eyesight wasn’t up to scratch.

A quarter said they couldn’t see well when driving at night, and 11 per cent said their daytime vision was ‘blurry’ when in their cars.

Around five per cent of new drivers in Bradford said they struggled to see the registration plate during the eyesight assessment in their driving test, but were given their licence anyway.

Steve Dando, optometrist at Openshaw Opticians in Cleckheaton, said: “Nearly 3,000 people are killed or injured every year in car accidents caused by poor eyesight.

"People who drive with bad eyesight are not only putting their own lives at risk, but others too.”
