Bradford’s historic Undercliffe Cemetery is to feature a number of events this summer to commemorate the First World War.

These include guided tours of the graves of 25 men who mostly fought and died during the four-and-a-half years of the war, which started in August 1914.

The charity that looks after Undercliffe intends to publish a booklet about them, but is especially short of information about nine of them.

Neil McLellan, registrar and co-ordinator at the Undercliffe Cemetery Charity, said: “We have varying amounts of information on these, but the ones where we are struggling for information are: Harry Beaumont, Harry Hall, Harry Hill, William Huggins and his father Thomas, Thomas Lingard, Horace Onions and the Preston Brothers.”

Some of the nine were killed in action, some died of their wounds later.

Harry Beaumont, however, died as a prisoner-of-war in Germany on October 19, 1918, less than a month before the Armistice. He was 19.

Thomas Huggins and his son William both survived the war and are buried in Undercliffe. The two Preston brothers served in different regiments and died in different places.

Robert served with the 23 Tyneside Scottish Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, and died of his wounds in a military hospital in June, 1917.

His brother Edgar fought with the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment and was killed on the Somme in France in August, 1916.

Mr McLellan said: “We are really keen to meet with any family members of any service people from the First World War who are at interred at Undercliffe.”

There will be three open days at the cemetery, which is a Grade-II English Heritage listed site: Thursday, July 10, 9.30am-3pm; Friday, July 11, 9.30am-3pm; and Saturday, July 12, 11am-4.pm.

Mr McLellan added: “Events include guided tours based on a First World War theme on those days, a school choir from Hanson Academy on the Friday and a Tea Tent from the YMCA, relating to the support they offered the front line troops during the war."

Anyone able to help should contact Mr McLellan at The Lodge, 127 Undercliffe Lane, Bradford BD3 ODW or by calling (01274) 642276.
