Bradford recognised for welcome to asylum-seekers
7:40am Wednesday 26th March 2014 in News
Bradford is the most welcoming place in the country for those seeking refuge from persecution, yesterday’s full Council meeting heard.
The city of Bradford has been re-awarded official ‘City of Sanctuary’ status in recognition of the work being done to welcome asylum seekers and refugees. At the meeting, Tiffy Allen, the national co-ordinator of the City of Sanctuary movement, presented the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Khadim Hussain, with a certificate to mark the award. She praised the work being done in the city.
She said: “Within the national scene, Bradford is a forerunner. When people talk about Bradford as a City of Sanctuary, there is a sense of respect, there isa sense of awe, so this movement is getting your city rightfully not just on the national map but right at the top of the map, where it belongs.” Bradford is one of a handful of UK cities participating in the United Nations refugees’ resettlement programme.
