Bradford is to be given an award for offering sanctuary to those fleeing persecution.
Bradford is already an official ‘City of Sanctuary’ for asylum seekers, but this status has now been endorsed by a City of Sanctuary movement review.
Bradford Council’s deputy leader, Councillor Imran Hussain, said: “The award recognises the hard work of many, including the refugee community itself, to ensure that those who have fled unimaginable persecution in their home countries receive the welcome, help and support they need to be able to settle and begin to contribute to the local community and economy.”
The reviewing team visited a number of local services, including Bevan House Primary Care Centre in Sunbridge Road.
Bradford is also one of a handful of UK cities participating in the UN High Commissioner for Refugees’ Gateway Resettlement Programme.
