The Police and Crime Commissioner has been asked to investigate claims that police are planning to close a vital community contact point.

Bradford councillor Michael Walls said he has been told there are proposals to sell off the former police building in New Park Road, Queensbury, to save money.

But Coun Walls (Con, Queensbury), a retired police officer who was involved in the contact point being opened, warned the cost to the community would be greater.

Coun Walls, a member of the Police and Crime Panel, has raised the issue with the panel and has written to PCC Mark Burns-Williamson seeking help.

The contact point was the first in the Bradford district when it opened in 2002, after the former Queensbury police station was refurbished at a cost of £15,000.

Coun Walls said: “I have been told the police are considering closing the contact point and selling the building.

“Police community support officers operate from the contact point and it is open at various times for the public to call in. I went to considerable trouble to get it there in the first place and it would be a great loss to the community.”

Coun Walls, writing to Mr Burns-Williamson, said Queensbury was isolated. He added: “I am assured that the budget savings would be so small it would be of no benefit compared to the loss to the community.”

Mr Burns-Williamson said: “We need to constantly look at how we can make savings and protect frontline policing.

“As yet no decision has been made with regard to Queensbury contact point, but I understand that alternative bases in the area are being looked at in order to best serve the community.”
