A Bradford aid charity is behind an appeal to save a school for blind children in Mogadishu.

Human Relief Foundation needs to raise £60,000 for equipment and find generous sponsors to donate £5,000 for the monthly upkeep of Al-Basiir School which helps give visually impaired youngsters a chance to live life to the full.

If the money is not raised then the school, which is the only one of its kind in Somalia, will have to shut.

There are 32 children at the school in the Waberi District of Mogadishu and 200 on a waiting list hoping it stays open and gets bigger with room for them said Sarah Gate who is communications officer for Human Relief Foundation.

"The school is vitally important for blind children in Mogadishu. In Somalia blindness is viewed as a curse.”
