A 33-year-old man tried to rape a woman walking home from a nightclub after attacking her in the street and dragging her over a fence, a jury at Bradford Crown Court heard.

The screaming victim managed to crawl away after hitting her assailant on the head with her shoe, it is alleged.

Mohammed Ansar, of Highfield Road, Keighley, denies attempted rape and committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence at about 2.30am on August 26 last year.

Prosecutor Michael Smith said the woman was found in Highfield Lane, without her handbag and shoes and in a dishevelled and distressed state. She told the police she was walking home when a man put his hand on her shoulder and offered her a lift.

He unlocked a vehicle, saying: “You come in the car with me. I’ll take you home, sister,” it is alleged.

When she refused, he tried to force her into the back.

She ran off but he followed, hit her on the head and dragged her over a fence and across a grassed area, down a bank.

Mr Smith said the man got on top of her and pulled at her knickers.

She struck him on the head with her shoe and managed to crawl, and then run, away.

Her boyfriend appeared when she was screaming for help in the street and residents came out to see what was going on.

The woman, in her early 30s, broke down and wept in the witness box yesterday as she gave her evidence.

She said her assailant was saying: “Please, please,” as he attacked her.

When she hit him on the head, he slipped on the bank and she managed to get away.

She ran into the road as a taxi approached but it drove round her.

She told the court she was dishevelled, without her shoes, and screaming “Help me.”

The jury was shown the bracelet the woman wore that night.

Mr Smith said grass sticking in it was from where she was dragged across the grass.

Defence barrister Jayne Beckett suggested to the woman that she and her boyfriend were drunk in the road and arguing when Ansar tried to drive past them.

When he pulled up and flashed his lights, the woman’s boyfriend grabbed his neck and pulled him from the car.

There was a scuffle in the street and the boyfriend kicked and headbutted Ansar, injuring him, she said.

The trial continues.
