Charity patron honour for Bradford champion boxer Junior Witter

Bradford Telegraph and Argus: Junior Witter Junior Witter

Former boxing world champion Junior Witter (right) has been named as the new patron of Bradford’s African Caribbean Achievement Project (ACAP).

The Bradford-born fighter was invited to become part of the charity in recognition of his sporting achievements and work in the community.

Witter, who won the WBC light-welterweight title in 2006, will be welcomed into his new role at an event at ACAP’s headquarters in Bradford on Friday.

He said: “I am really delighted to be invited to become ACAP’s patron. When I was a youngster growing up in Bradford, there was nothing like ACAP to support and inspire young people from the African Caribbean communities.

“The work the charity is doing provides incredible support for Bradford’s young achievers but also strengthens communities.”

Anybody remember another local boxer, Bruce Woodcock. I don't know if he was ever a champion but I do remember he lived on Huddersfield Road at Low Moor when I was a kid.

Only other Bradford boxer's of note I can remember are Bobby Vanzie and Frank Grant, both were quality fighters and won British Lonsdale Belts, Vanzie won his outright, his son is a top amateur boxer I believe.

One other thing regarding Junior Witter, he won the one real boxing belt...the WBC....a class act!!!
