Firefighters have praised the quick thinking of a nursing home worker who quelled a blaze.

The fire started in a jet oven in the kitchens of the Well Springs Nursing Home, Leylands Lane, Heaton, at about 11.30pm last night.

Crews from Shipley and Fairweather Green fire stations were called, but the fire was out by the time they had arrived.

Shipley watch commander Johnny Earl said: “It was a fault in the oven and the staff nurse luckily was in the kitchen at the time.

“She disconnected the fuel supply and it burnt itself out in the oven.

“She did well.”

He said the building didn’t have to be evacuated.
