Looming cuts to Environment Agency jobs are “a concern” for waste enforcement work in Bradford.
Coun Andrew Thornton, the Council's executive member for the environment, said the cuts could hit improvements made over recent months.
Coun Thornton spoke out ahead of a meeting at which councillors will get details of Agency work in the past year, including action on illegal waste sites.
In a report to the environment and waste management scrutiny committee tomorrow, the Agency says it has shared intelligence and resources with the Council to tackle more than 30 cases of illegal waste sites.
But it warns: “The Agency is set to cut 1,700 jobs in the next few months. We expect to reduce our work on illegal waste activities as this is not funded through grant aid.”
Coun Thornton said: “There is concern that cuts could hit improvements across the Bradford district at premises and sites where the Agency has responsibility for enforcing rules.”
The Agency says new structures will be announced later this month and that there will be a consultation period.
