A Bradford MP has been meeting takeaway owners to encourage a reduction in people putting salt on their meals.

The ‘salt pot swap’ provides takeaways with replacement salt shakers with fewer holes to reduce the amount of salt customers have on their meals.

As part of the exchange, David Ward visited Idle Balti, Dragon Chef and Undercliffe Fisheries to talk about the importance of healthier meals.

The swap is part of Bradford Council’s Good Food Award, targeted at food outlets in an effort to promote healthier choices. It is estimated up to 300 people die from heart disease every year in Bradford alone because of poor diet.

Trading Standards experts have been providing staff with training and guidance on how to make small changes to meals that will increase their nutritional value.

The Bradford East Lib Dem MP said: “Whilst we all love a good takeaway, it’s important to help our local businesses to do more to promote healthy eating choices.”
