A man who falsely claimed to be a robbery victim has been fined by police.

The 19-year-old, of Bradford, reported that he and a 29-year-old woman had been 'car jacked' by two men while tparked in Legrams Lane.

But the pair gave conflicting statements about the incident.

A check on the vehicle's movements showed it was clearly damaged about an hour before the report was made.

Further investigation established the man invented the robbery after the vehicle, a white Mercedes-Benz he had borrowed from a friend, was damaged.

The man was arrested, admitted making a false report and was fined £90.

Detective Inspector Alan Flynn, of Bradford CID, said: “"Instead of escaping payment for the damage, he found himself footing the bill for that and a fine for wasting police time."
