Haggis was on the menu as pupils at Stanbury Primary School, near Haworth, celebrated the birthday of Scottish poet Robert Burns.

They tucked into the North of the Border delicacy during their annual “Burns Supper” yesterday lunchtime.

Pupils walked to the top table with head Graham Swinbourne for the traditional cutting of the haggis.

Before the meal there was a rendition of the Selkirk Grace, which was written by Burns, and the children sang Auld Lang Syne .

Mr Swinbourne said: “The haggis is traditionally cut with a sword but we used a big knife. We sang all the verses of Auld Lang Syne, not just the chorus.”

The pupils also learned about Scottish culture and heritage during the event, which is held every year at the school.
