A Bradford councillor has urged caution to anyone buying a used car after it emerged one West Yorkshire dealer had misrepresented a car’s mileage by more than 100,000 miles.
Liaqat Ali, trading as ABC Bargain Cars and AB Bargain Cars of Alexandra Road, Leeds, was fined £1,200 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £1,900 at Leeds Magistrates’ Court this month in relation to a series of offences resulting from his car trading.
Two of Ali’s vehicles were sold or advertised with false odometer readings. One was advertised as taxed and tested when there was no MOT, and another as having a ‘genuine mileage’ when there was in fact a massive discrepancy. A further vehicle was advertised without any reference to it being an insurance write-off.
The court heard Ali purchased a Volvo V50 from a Morley motor auction in July 2012 with a mileage reading of 192,008 miles. He then advertised it with a mileage of 86,972.
Councillor Val Slater, chairman of the West Yorkshire Trading Standards Committee, said: “Vehicles advertised on the internet are not always what they appear to be and false mileages and documents can deceive the unwary buyer. It pays to carry out checks before any purchase.
