Up to 1,000 Muslims are expected to march through Keighley on Sunday to celebrate the birthday of the prophet Muhammad.

Roads in central Keighley will be closed for the procession between 11am and around 12.30pm.

The holy prophet’s birthday is one of the main celebrations of the Muslim calendar. Mohammed Saleem, from Keighley Muslim Association, said the march was a peaceful demonstration where people talked about Muhammad’s life and character.

He said: “As Muslims we celebrate this day to signify that the greatest favour of the Almighty Allah is through the Holy Prophet Muhammad.”

The procession starts at 11am from the Jamia mosque in Emily Street and takes a circular route along Lawkholme Lane, Alice Street, North Street, Cavendish Street and back to the mosque.
