Charity helping Bradford sick children and families have a holiday appeals for money
A Bradford charity needs help from the community to keep making dreams come true for some of the district’s sickest children.
Registered nurse Mary Appleton started the charity almost 13 years ago and since then has helped hundreds of children and their families enjoy a fun break away.
Fulfil The Wish yesterday took 25 youngsters, their parents and brothers and sisters off to Bendrigg outdoor pursuit centre in the Lake District for a week.
And in August they took a group of families for the holiday of a lifetime in Disneyland Paris.
Helped by a small band of volunteers, mainly Mrs Appleton’s family, the charity’s aim is to take the headache out of organising trips away.
She said: “If you could see what some of our families go through in their everyday lives you would totally understand how they need to get away and have a break for a bit.
“One of our little boys is only ten and he’s already on his 64th operation.”
The charity meets the costs for all the children and the families pay for themselves but the holiday bills can mount up and that is why more help is needed from people who would like to support Fulfil The Wish or fundraise for it.
Mrs Appleton said: “They all have such a wonderful time. The children enjoy being with other children, siblings get to be with other siblings who are in similar situations and the parents get a bit of company as well. The experience helps everyone.
“Staying at the Bendrigg trust means children with all kinds of disabilities will have an opportunity to experience a range of outward bound activities that would not normally be possible for them to do. They can go on the zipwire and go up the climbing wall. There isn’t anything their physical disability stops them from doing.”
