Raiders strike six times in two days stealing valuable paving slabs
Brazen thieves have stolen 41 pieces of Yorkshire stone in six raids in Bradford.
They struck five times in two locations last Friday night into Saturday morning, before swiping 20 stones in one go on Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Police believe the same people are behind all the raids and said a mixture of paving slabs and coping stone were stolen.
A spokesman said: “We want people to be vigilant. There has been an increase in theft of Yorkshire stone in Bradford, particularly in the West Bowling area. Between September 13 and 15 there were six separate offences recorded.”
She added: “We have one of the highest rates of burglary and it is a priority that police and the Council have taken very seriously.
“Clearly a lot more needs to be done as there is an issue with Yorkshire stone in Little Horton ward and across the district. The two main things are metal theft and Yorkshire stone.”
Coun Ikram continued: “It is a grave issue and I am very upset to hear about it. The perpetrators do not realise how much it costs to replace them.
“I would like to see a stop to this and I urge people with information to come forward.”
The police spokesman added: “These offences cannot be committed without the aid of a vehicle, so we would like to remind people to look out for any suspicious vans in their area and to take whatever steps they can to secure or mark any valuable stone that they have.”
Anyone with information on who is responsible for the thefts, or where the stone could be being disposed of, is asked to ring police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Alternatively, go to crimestoppers-uk.org.
