Bingley garage owner says he'll drive up donations
A garage owner who was one of nine to cycle from Edinburgh to the Bradford area has pledged to match customers’ donations towards the charity feat.
Nick Greaves and others rode from The Sun Inn, in Dalikeith, to The Fleece in Addingham, which are both owned by Craig Minto.
They cycled between 40 and 60 miles a day hoping to raise £1,000 for cancer charities. But that target has now been smashed with the total at £2,725 and money still being donated following the ride in August.
Mr Greaves said the amount did not include cash donated by customers at the Star Garage in Whitley Street, Bingley, where he has set-up a collection bucket and display about the ride.
“I think there’s about £250 at the garage and the garage will match that, so that will be about £500 and I think if we get our finger out, I think we could get it to £3,000,” he said.
Mr Greaves, 45, said customers had been really generous in supporting the event and any tips staff got were also going into the kitty.
One of the riders was Scott Spitty, of Billingham, who has leukaemia. The pair met on a camping trip and became friends.
“He’s just grown as a friend and after the bike ride together, we’ve all got closer,” Mr Greaves said.
“He’s got into exercise and he’s just pushed forward and it’s just helping him in fighting it and keeping him mentally fit as well,” he said.
Mr Spitty’s wife, Kristen, has set-up a JustGiving page for online donations.
She said: “A good friend of mine who is seriously into cycling got me into it last year and while I enjoy it, it would be fair to say I am a fair weather cyclist. Scott is pretty serious and goes out to Spain to climb the mountains near Marbella. He also has leukaemia, so cycles to help with the condition. I propose that we raise as much money as we can for all types of cancer.”
The money will go to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, Candlelighters and Macmillan.
Mr Greaves will be collecting at the garage until the end of September.
