Crime commissioner responds to Bradford West MP George Galloway's request
6:48pm Friday 13th September 2013 in News
Crime commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson has responded to Bradford West MP George Galloway's demands why £70,000 a year paid in perks to Sir Norman Bettison when he was West Yorkshire Chief Constable was kept secret from the public.
Mr Galloway alleges Sir Norman was the beneficiary of the secret deal in 2009 with the West Yorkshire Police Authority while Mr Burns-Williamson was its chairman. He said: “This sweetheart deal gave Bettison more than £34,000 a year for a private car, although he already had a police one and driver. He got private medical insurance, gym membership and other personal benefits.”
Mr Burns-Williamson said in a letter back to Mr Galloway yesterday that the payment had never been kept a secret.
He added: “The amounts paid to Sir Norman Bettison since 2007 have never been secret. The authority’s statutory accounts contain details of the total remuneration paid to its senior officers and Force Command Team.”
