Standing ovation for Bradford fundraising swimmers
6:40am Wednesday 11th September 2013 in News
A fundraiser received a standing ovation after completing an open-air swim despite having complex disabilities.
Mark Longstaff, 52, of Bradford, who has cerebral palsy, finished a 500m swim across the lake at Pugneys Country Park, near Wakefield. Mr Longstaff – who uses a wheelchair, has limited use of one of his arms and is visually impaired – finished the Jane Tomlinson Swim for All in 32 minutes and 45 seconds.
He said: “It was tough but I was determined to finish it.
“I wanted to finish in under an hour so to do just over 30 minutes was brilliant. I had a great time.”
His friend, Helena Romanowska, also took part, completing a 1500m swim in 41 minutes and 35 seconds.
She said: “Mark estimated he would do the 500m swim in about an hour, all things considered.
“We were lucky that a member of Wakefield Triathlon Club volunteered to swim with him and kept him on track and he actually did the swim in 32.45, so was completely chuffed with himself.”
